Prise en main

Getting started

1. Choisir sa gamme

1. Pick your scale

Open the Gammes (Scales) tab and check that your scale is listed with the right notes. Since every handpan is individually tuned, compare the preset with your own instrument and adjust if needed — everything is editable. The first note in the list is always the ding.

2. Créer une partition

2. Create a score

Onglet Partitions, bouton +.

Partitions (Scores) tab, + button. Give it a title, choose the scale, then tap the notes straight onto the handpan. Each tap adds a beat with the duration selected above.

3. Relire

3. Read it back

Tap a score in the list. The tiles show the notes ahead, the window advances by itself at your chosen tempo, and you can tap any tile to jump to that point.

Questions fréquentes

Frequently asked questions

My scale is not in the list. What can I do?

Onglet Gammes → menu ⋯ → Nouvelle gamme.

Tu n'as rien à placer toi-même.

Gammes tab → ⋯ menu → Nouvelle gamme (New scale). Enter the notes one by one, starting with the ding. Accepted spellings are D3, B♭3 (or Bb3), F♯4 (or F#4). The + and − buttons transpose by a semitone, and the preview lets you hear each field to check.

The zigzag layout is computed automatically from the number of notes, from 7 to 10. You do not have to position anything yourself.

How do I notate two notes played together?

In the editor, switch on Mode accord (chord mode). Your taps accumulate on a single beat instead of creating successive beats, then Ajouter l'accord commits them. This is also how you combine a note with a slap.

What do the letters S, T and B mean?

These are the percussive strikes, the ones that do not produce a pitch:

SymbolNameGesture
SSlapdry strike on the shoulder of the shell
TTakbright snap on the rim
BBasslow hit underneath, near the gu
Why is the ding numbered 0 here and 1 elsewhere?

Both conventions circulate in handpan tablature and neither is official. Go to the Réglages (Settings) tab → Ding numéroté 0 to switch between them. The setting applies everywhere instantly.

I cannot keep up with the screen while playing.

Three settings help, in the Réglages (Settings) tab:

  • Notes par ligne (notes per row) — drop to 1 or 2 to enlarge each note.
  • Afficher le handpan (show the handpan) — turn it off and only the numbers remain, very large, readable at a glance from a distance.
  • Tempo — in the player, slow right down while you learn the passage.
Can I play a score from the middle?

Oui.

Yes. In the editor, select the step you want in the top strip, then start playback — it begins at that note. On pause, the cursor lands on the note reached, so pressing play again resumes from exactly there. In the player, just tap the tile you want.

Où sont enregistrées mes partitions ? Sont-elles synchronisées ? Where are my scores saved? Are they synced?

They are stored on your device only, in the app's private container. There is no account and no server, so no cross-device sync for now.

Important consequence: deleting the app deletes your scores and custom scales with it. A full iCloud or iTunes device backup does preserve them.

Can the app listen to my handpan and write the score by itself?

Not in this version. Automatic transcription was built and then set aside: on a handpan, notes ring for two to three seconds and overlap, and each note produces an octave and a fifth that mislead pitch detectors. The results were not reliable enough to ship. Entry is therefore manual, which stays quick once you get the knack.

Le son est déformé ou absent. The sound is distorted or missing.
  • Check the silent switch and the iPhone volume.
  • If a multi-note chord distorts, lower the system volume: overlapping notes add up.
  • Another audio app may be holding the output. Close it, then relaunch HandPan Parts.
  • As a last resort, force-quit the app and reopen it: the audio engine resets on launch.
The tone fields are too small on my screen.

Fields shrink when a scale has many notes, so that none overlap. On iPad the display is considerably roomier. In the Réglages (Settings) tab, choosing Numéros (numbers) instead of Les deux (both) frees space and enlarges the digit in each field.
